Online and digital radio: how to listen for free

Online radio, FM radio, digital radio: the names get mixed up, but they are different things. This guide explains the difference, shows how much data streaming uses and teaches you to listen to stations from Brazil and the world for free, right in your browser or on your phone.

Online, FM and digital radio: what is the difference?

  • FM and AM radio: the station broadcasts radio waves and you need a receiver with an antenna. Reach depends on the station's power and where you are.
  • Terrestrial digital radio: it also uses radio waves, but with a digital signal. Several countries use standards such as DAB+ and HD Radio, which usually coexist with FM. It needs a compatible receiver.
  • Online radio (streaming): the station sends audio over the internet and you listen on any connected device. It does not matter where the station is: a broadcaster in Salvador, Lisbon or Tokyo sounds the same on your phone.

Many FM stations also stream online, so online radio is often the easiest way to hear your favorite station outside its city.

Advantages of online radio

  • Variety: thousands of stations from many countries and styles in one place.
  • No antenna or special device: a browser is enough.
  • Predictable quality: many stations stream at 128 kbps or more, which usually sounds good on headphones and speakers.
  • Listening from far away: reconnect with your hometown station or practice a language by listening to broadcasters abroad.

How much data does online radio use?

The math is simple: usage depends on the station's bitrate.

  • 64 kbps: about 29 MB per hour.
  • 128 kbps: about 58 MB per hour.
  • 192 kbps: about 86 MB per hour.

On Wi-Fi this is no problem. On mobile data, prefer lower-bitrate stations if your plan is limited. In FreeRadio each station shows its quality (for example, 128k), and you can use the search filters to pick a minimum quality.

How to choose a good station

  • Look at the quality (kbps) and format (MP3, AAC): stations at 128k or more usually sound better.
  • Use the like button to help good stations climb the most-liked ranking.
  • If a station does not play, it may be offline at the moment. Try another one in the same genre and come back later.

The future of radio

Radio keeps gaining new layers: high-quality streams, integration with apps and connected devices, and more ways to discover stations by taste, country and language. What stays is the charm of a real voice and music chosen by people, live.
